Hawker Hurricane

Hurricane

The Hurricane was less modern than the Spitfire, but served in greater numbers during the Battle of Britain. The slower Hurricanes were often directed against the enemy bombers while the Spits took on the escorting fighters. Its reliability and ease of maintenance kept it in service long after more capable fighters replaced it in the air superiority role, adopting the role of tank killer, night fighter and even carrier plane. Roald Dahl, the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, flew a Hurricane during the war.
